At 60, what would you begin?

In 1927, at the age of 60 Gutzon Borglum began work on Mount Rushmore. He had a vision and relentlessly pursued what men even half his age would never attempt. We spent a truly enjoyable and informative hour and a half learning about the man and his memorial to our nation’s history at the Borglum Historical Center in Keystone a couple miles short of Mount Rushmore itself.

After leaving the Historical Center, we proceeded up the hill to Mount Rushmore itself…what a sight to behold. Each of these faces is over 60 feet tall. The eye of one of them is 8 feet across!! It was truly amazing to see these things in person. Adjectives are inadequate to describe the staggering size of these rocks; and then to imagine the effort required back then actually carve these heads!

After we left Mount Rushmore, we continued on to our amazing KOA facilities for the night. Our only regret is that we did not have time to stay there longer. But tomorrow it's on to Cody, Wyoming by way of Deadwood, South Dakota.
